Design Fabrication Workshops ǀ code of conduct
This document is a contract between you and the Department of Design. It lays out basic levels of safety, responsible behaviour and conduct that will be expected of you at all times when you enter or work within the Design Fabrication Workshops. The workshops present potentially serious risks to the health and safety of users. You must adhere to workshop rules and instructions given you by workshop staff, conducting yourself with particular regard to your safety and that of others around you. This will include, but is not limited to the following:
Basic Safety
• You are responsible for the safety of yourself and other workshop users; you must not ignore any activity or situation you know or recognise to be contrary to your understanding of what is safe
• You are obliged to inform workshop staff of any dangerous or hazardous activity or situation you encounter, know of or see
• You must not unlock nor activate any equipment or power supplies which you find to be locked or know are otherwise restricted. Equipment and power supplies may only be unlocked by workshop staff
• Only use equipment that has been demonstrated to you by workshop staff; never use equipment about which you feel unsure or unconfident
• Never leave machinery running unattended
• Always use the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided when using machinery or equipment that
produces harmful levels of debris, fumes, heat, sparks, noise, vibration or other potentially harmful
consequences for which equipment is provided to minimise or mitigate personal risk
• Do not run or throw objects (especially tools) or deliberately distract others when they are operating
equipment or machinery
• Dress appropriately for workshop activities; your torso, legs and feet should be covered; ensure you
have no loose clothing, scarves, belts, etc. that may become stuck in moving machinery; prevent long
hair from falling forwards, obstructing your vision or becoming entangled
• Do not use personal music systems; you need to hear what’s going on around you
• Do not eat or drink in the fabrication workshops; poisonous or harmful substances can be ingested into
the body in this way
• Check with workshop staff first before using materials, equipment, chemicals, etc. not supplied or
purchased within the Design Fabrication workshops; these could be dangerous or damaging to equipment
Common Sense
• Be respectful and considerate of others when using the workshops; tidy up, put things away afterwards, leave the workshops in the kind of condition you would wish to find them
• Don’t work in places where you obstruct doorways and thoroughfares or where you obstruct others from accessing equipment
• Be courteous, calm and realistic in your expectations; the workshops can become extremely busy, especially as project deadlines become imminent

Materials

Students will be required to acquire and provide their own materials, with the exception of those used during Technical Studies and formally taught workshop sessions. Off-cut bins are located in the workshop foyer and students may use any materials found in these free of charge.
A range of materials are available to buy through the workshops including MDF & Plywood, Timber, Plastics, Plaster, Clay, Rubber and Resin as well as adhesives and small items of equipment (a list of generally available materials & prices can be found on the Workshop VLE). These materials are sold to students at cost price; the Department makes no profit on these sales. Please note that the Workshops cannot process cash or bank cards in payment for materials; you will need to top-up your student card with sufficient funds, from which payment will be deducted.
